Summary

The story essentially follows Alana, from the Winged World and Marko, from the Horned World. They are soldiers belonging to warring worlds. But Alana and Marko fell in love when Marko surrendered himself because he was tired of being at war all the time. Their love bore fruit in the way of Hazel a baby who had the best of both worlds (horns and wings) and it is her narrative that we are reading.

Parties from both worlds are on the hunt for their deserters and their child and want them dead. They have even hired some freelancers (deadly assassins) to ensure the success of the job. The couple with their kid is running away to various planets in the galaxy to hide their child from the evils of the world. The novel has themes of fantasy, sci-fi, and romance.

My Review

The illustrations are beautiful and truly so expressive.  The universe created is mystifying.

And the weird but fun characters had me laughing and marveling at the writer’s imagination. The Spade, who is a woman and a spider or maybe a tarantula. Sex workers who don’t have torsos, unicorn people, no legs ghosts, people with TV heads, people with eyes placed in the center of the forehead, a sea-horsish man, and naked giants.

Sounds extremely weird but you won’t be able to stop turning pages until you find out what happens to the beautiful couple and their kid.

But know this even amongst all this craziness there are some very morally inspiring thoughts and acts that will leave you feeling good and happy. I especially loved Hazel’s take on relationships and The Will’s reaction to seeing a six-year-old kid at the pimp’s. “Doesn't matter if it's personal or professional, a good partnership takes work.”

Final Verdict

I most definitely recommend this series, and can’t wait to find out what happens next in the story.
