Synopsis

Bryce is a snowboarding sensation, a cocky teenager from California with a giant chip on his shoulder called Type 1 diabetes. He competes because he has something to prove.

Daria is a rising star in figure skating, a withdrawn teen from Russia with a tragic past. She competes to provide her family with a better life.

Primed to overthrow archrivals who dominate their sports, they’re both headed to the Winter Olympics. But soon after arriving at the Games, a flurry of ill-timed setbacks threatens to shatter their dreams.

When two teens from halfway around the world meet, they discover an unlikely but undeniable connection. As they gear up for their final shots at medals, they help each other realize the greatest barrier to the top of the podium might be hiding inside their minds.

Take a breathtaking ride with Bryce and Daria as they find true understanding, try to overcome the bitterness of their pasts, and share a romance more meaningful than winning gold.

Written by the parent of a child with Type 1 diabetes.

My Summary

Bryce, a 17-year old sensational American snowboarder, and Daria, a 16-year old phenomenal Russian figure skater, are about to enter the competition of a lifetime, the Olympics. But these are no ordinary athletes. Battling diseases they wished they never had, they find the love they never dreamt. Different countries, different languages, different backgrounds, different goals. But will this love across borders last beyond their thirst for the coveted Olympic Gold, or will it blossom into something breathtaking?

“It was the way she felt when he smiled at her.”

My review

THE ICE IN OUR HEARTS  begins with Bryce and Daria preparing for their journey to the Olympic village. They first get in touch over Instagram and then meet in a press interview before the competition. The book has 50 Chapters that are in the third person and alternate between Bryce and Daria.

I found unique about this story the in-depth way B.C. Powell has researched, described, and glorified snowboarding and figure skating. I knew little about these sports, and I found the writing extremely informative and easy to follow. I loved that about the book. The details into the program and structure of the Winter Olympics were educational too.

Thanks to the author, I now know what a quad Lutz, triple loop combo with a Rippon on the second jump in skating, and what a switch frontside quad cork eighteen hundred with a nose grab is in snowboarding is.:)

I will be honest and say that I even shed a few tears while the author described Daria’s relation with her parents, coach, and choreographer. It was deeply emotional and very realistic. I connected with the characters instantly.

The acts towards the end as part of the character’s participation in the Olympics were so descriptive and visual that I imagined the whole scene as if it were happening before my eyes. And it got me so interested I even Googled some videos of the sports to evaluate my imagination.

Final Verdict

The sporty terms here are quite descriptive, so at times it becomes a little too techy for casual readers. I loved the book, but being a complete romance buff, I would have loved it more had there been some more romantic scenes. So I rate this book a well-deserved four stars out of five.
