The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell

"The Family Upstairs" by Lisa Jewell is a gripping mystery novel and thriller. It follows the story of Libby Jones. She inherits a mansion on her 25th birthday. But the house has a dark past involving a mysterious family and their deaths. The story alternates between Libby’s present-day investigation and the past lives of the house's former occupants. Get ready to reveal some shocking secrets.

The story telling is compelling with its many twists. But some scenes seem far-fetched. Also, some of the POVs seem confusing with the past and present intermingling.

This book is perfect for fans of mysteries and thrillers. If you enjoy unraveling secrets and love a good page-turner, do read it.

Tales from the Café by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

"Tales from the Cafe" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a sequel to "Before the Coffee Gets Cold." It is set in a small Tokyo café where customers can travel back in time. The book follows different people as they revisit their pasts. Each story speaks of a different relationships and therefore different emotion each time.

The stories are touching and explore deep emotions. They offer a glimpse into the characters’ lives. But the plot can feel repetitive and slow, with similar themes in each story - a person enters the café. They have a back story or regret for a dead person. They want to go back. They are told the rules and they go back. Meet the person and are back with a lighter mind and happier heart.

If you enjoy gentle, time-travelling stories with a slow-pace, you might enjoy this book.

"The Bloody Chamber," by Angela Carter is a collection of dark, gothic fairy tales with a twist. Each story reimagines classic fairy tales, like "Beauty and the Beast," and "Little Red Riding Hood". But they have a more eerie vibe and are meant for adults. The title story follows a young bride who discovers her new husband’s dark and bloody secrets.
I loved that the author took a unique spin on traditional tales. Also, all the stories feature strong female characters. But frankly, I thought the language of the stories was a little rusty and hence difficult to follow.
If you like gothic literature, this book is a treat.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

"The Kiss Quotient" by Helen Hoang is a heartwarming and unique romance novel. The story follows Stella, a brilliant mathematician with Asperger's syndrome. She struggles with dating. and so hires Michael, an escort, to teach her about relationships and intimacy. As they spend time together, their arrangement blossoms into something deeper.

The book is a refreshing romance book, and shows a relatable and lovable protagonist. Stella's journey of self-discovery and acceptance is beautifully written. I would describe her relationship with Michael as sweet and genuine. I loved that the story is both emotional and funny. The representation of autism in a positive light is also noteworthy.

It's a perfect book for readers who like emotional, character-driven stories.

Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King

"Good Vibes, Good Life" by Vex King is a self-help book about living a happier, more positive life. The author shares his personal experiences. He gives practical advice on self-love, gratitude, and mindfulness. The book is meant to inspire readers to adopt a positive mindset(vibes). And make choices that lead to a happy life.
I thought the book was easy to read and understand, with simple language and relatable stories. And yet, some of the advice can feel repetitive or too simplistic.
If you’re looking for an easy-to-read book with positive and practical advice on improving your mindset, this book is a great choice.
