END-OF-YEAR Book Tag – 2023 Edition!

The end-of-the-year book tag basically explores the books that I still want to read before the end of the year and my reading plans for the coming year, by asking some very simple questions. But before we jump into them I am super-excited to share my ready journey of 2023 so far!

So I’ve already completely knocked off my Goodreads reading goal of 2023 of 52 books and I managed to do that in September. Currently, I am reading my 58th book.

The End of Year Book Tag was created by YouTuber and poet Ariel Bissett to reflect on all the books readers need and aspire to read before the year is over.

Unique Book Recommendations to help you find your next read

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

I am not someone who leaves books midway, and if that happens it’s definitely a DNF. But there is a series I want to start this year and I’m sure I’ll continue reading it deep into next year. Because every books in the series is massive. Also, it is a genre I usually avoid – science fiction. This series as three books and it is called the Illuminae series by Jay Kristoff.

The Illuminae series is a young adult science fiction trilogy that has gained considerable popularity since its release. The first book in the series, "Illuminae," introduces readers to a futuristic world where two rival corporations are at war. The story unfolds through a unique format of classified documents, emails, instant messages, and surveillance footage.

The subsequent books in the trilogy are "Gemina" and "Obsidio," each continuing the thrilling narrative with new characters and perspectives.

Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

India doesn’t have autumn, but we’ll begin winter soon here. So I’d love a good twisted psychological thriller to cosy up to.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

Oh, I am always excited about new releases! And it seems like I have a specific one in mind - "The Mystery Guest" by Nita Prose. How intriguing! Waiting for a new release can be both thrilling and filled with anticipation. It's like unravelling a surprise package, not knowing what wonders lie inside.

"The Mystery Guest" sounds like it will take us on an exciting journey, perhaps filled with twists and turns that keep us on the edge of our seats. With Nita Prose at the helm, we can expect captivating storytelling and characters that come alive on the pages.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

I want to read the new and very popular releases of this year - YellowFace by R.F.Kuang, Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann, and Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano.

"YellowFace" by R.F. Kuang is a thought-provoking novel that explores themes of identity and cultural appropriation. It delves into the complexities of race and representation in the entertainment industry, offering a unique perspective on these timely issues.

In "Killers of the Flower Moon," David Grann takes readers on a gripping journey through history. This non-fiction book uncovers the chilling true story of a series of murders that occurred in 1920s Oklahoma, revealing shocking details about corruption and injustice against Native American communities.

For those seeking a heartfelt and emotionally resonant read, "Hello Beautiful" by Ann Napolitano might be just what you're looking for. This novel follows the life of Connor, who wakes up after a tragic accident with no memory of his past. As he navigates his new reality, he discovers surprising truths about himself and those around him.

Whether you're interested in exploring social issues through fiction or delving into real-life mysteries and personal journeys, these three books offer diverse perspectives that are sure to captivate readers before the year comes to an end.

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?

I read Babel by R.F. Kuang this year, a book I wouldn’t normally pick because one its huge and two its not my preferred genre. But I am glad I picked it because that’s become my favorite book of the year so far. So just because I loved R.F. Kuang’s writing I am thinking I might also love Yellowface released by the author this year and it also happens to fall in my favorite genre – Mystery.

The premise of YellowFace alone sets it apart from other books in its genre, making it an intriguing choice for readers seeking something fresh and unconventional. It promises to challenge societal norms and provoke discussions about representation, cultural exchange, and power dynamics.

While it remains to be seen whether YellowFace will live up to its potential as a shocking and favorite book of the year, the combination of R.F. Kuang's talent as a writer and the provocative subject matter makes it worth considering for those looking for an immersive reading experience that pushes boundaries.
