How far would you go to right a wrong?

Nine months ago, Tess’s five-year-old daughter was killed in a car accident. The driver, Brady Becker, was sentenced to two years in prison. It didn't make Tess’s pain go away.

Brady also has a daughter: A twelve-year-old named Eve who walks to Chandler Middle School every day. Tess knows this because she's been watching Eve for the last three weeks. It isn’t fair that Brady’s daughter gets to live, while Tess’s daughter does not.

When Eve goes missing, all eyes turn to Tess, who doesn’t have an alibi. But Tess isn’t guilty.

Or so she believes.

My review

The book started slow. We were taken through Tess’s routine, her feelings, and her emotions, the aftermath of her daughter’s accidental death. But the story quickly picked up speed and was interesting until the very end. I felt that this book was as much a mystery book as it was about marital relationships. The roller coaster that Josh and Tess were going through because of a catastrophic event that happened in their life, was portrayed very truthfully and in great detail.

“Because life is cruel, unfair, and messy… and I know that hope, above all else, is the most dangerous cargo we choose to carry.”

I think it's human nature to blame someone else for what you’ve lost in life. And life comes full circle for Tess when she is confronted with a similar situation in the end and all the fingers point to her. The elaborate and distinctive characterization of Tess is the metaphorical cherry on the top. Her conversations in her head will bring out your emotions strongly as a reader. Sometimes you’ll be frustrated with her for not being honest with Josh and sometimes your heart will just overflow with sympathy and kindness for her as a grieving mother.

Summing up, I think it’s a well-written story with great characters and some twists that are definitely worth a read. I rate it 4 out of stars. And recommend it to older readers who’ve been through relationships and understand what being a parent means.

“It’s one of the things Josh and I learned in premarital counseling: men want to fix things, while women want to be heard.”

I thank Emma from damppebbles, and the author for a copy of this book and for having me on this wonderful book tour.
