Summary

Murder in Paradise consists of three short stories based on mysterious murders. The Lawyer Lifeguard is about a defense lawyer, Brian Lord, who survives a car bomb that killed his fiancé. He takes on the job of a lifeguard not knowing that a storm is about to hit him.

The second story, The Doctor’s Plot, is about a medical examiner Abi Brenner who takes up a job in Napa Valley, not knowing that her predecessor was killed. She believes she has landed her dream job, but her fairy tale is about to take an ugly turn.

The third story and my favorite, The Shut-In,  is about Tricia Celeno, who loves watching the world through her drone camera as she is confined to her studio apartment owing to a rare disease. She accidentally witnesses a murder while flying her drone through the streets and too late realizes that the murderer spotted her drone.

My Review

All the stories have one thing in common. The pages turn themselves. They are gripping. They are unputdownable (if that’s a word). You are hanging on to every word in the story. The characters portrayed are unique.  Lord is a lawyer turned lifeguard, Abi is a medical examiner(that job is a rare find in itself) and Tricia suffers a rare disease, so rare you’ve never even heard of it. The locations for all the stories are also beautiful. The title of the book defines the plot.

The writing is eloquent. Another thing I liked about Patterson’s writing style was the length of his chapters. They are short, nothing more than 4 pages. That gives the reader an impression that the story is moving very fast. The stories soon get the readers involved. The language and dialogue is realistic.

My favorite story had a surprise twist towards the end, which is what I liked best. Also as the story progressed it was like there was a race between Tricia and the murderer to outweigh themselves and they were keeping score. It got nail-bitingly intense. It was a creepy yet clever story.

Final Verdict

There was nothing to dislike about the book. It deserves a perfect score of 5 stars.

Who Should Read It

Crime and mystery fans will definitely love this three stories in one book gift. There is no content sexual or profane in nature. So this book is also suited to young adult fans. Readers who are averse to reading about murders and blood should stay away.

A typical beach read. Fans of the thriller genre, rejoice, we have another brilliant writer to help us dive into our adventures and get lost in them.

It’s your funeral – The Lawyer Lifeguard

Happy reading!
