Summary

I Don’t Like Racism is an illustrated board book for kids aged 4 -18 years. The book tells the story of racism through the eyes of a young and bold African-American girl and her experiences with her cousin's unfair involvement in police brutality. She is trying to understand what all this meant.

to see in the world.”

My review

Tymeka Coney must be applauded for thinking of writing this book for kids. It’s a shame that even in the 21st-century, kids need to be taught about equality-about not being a victim to unfair treatment, and not meting out unfair treatment to others just because of the color of their skin. But unfortunately, that’s true, and this book will teach the kids just that. This book is essential in light of the recent events because I’m sure all the kids would have been wondering what really happened and why all the elders were so agitated with what happened.

The lyrical rhyming of the story makes it catchy, and the author has kept the language simple enough for young kids to quickly grasp what is being said. The illustrations by Nida Saeed are gorgeous, and the expressions of the vibrant young girl have been rendered quite beautifully.

I loved the bit towards the end when the little girl in the story asks us to embrace all our differences with love, and there is a picture of many different kids with happy smiles on their faces.

The book captures children’s emotion of curiosity aptly thorough the young girl who asks her teacher and her Mom about her history and slavery and questions what’s so wrong about everyone playing together and eating together. It’s a thought-provoking book for every generation.

Children’s books cannot be complete without a moral or message, and this book achieves this part loud and clear. It’s a well thought out, well-written, well-depicted inspirational tale for children.

The book mentions that it is meant for ages 4 – 18. Only younger kids below 7 will need their parent’s/grandparent's aid for reading and understanding the topic and its context as I think it might be beyond their little worlds.

Final Verdict

I award the book a well-deserved 5-star rating for its simple language, beautiful illustrations, bold topic, poetic writing, and positive message.
