Summary

Truly intimate, these are eleven short stories about various contemporary women in varying stages of motherhood.

My Review

A story about a woman trying to buy illegal drugs to abort her unwanted pregnancy, and the story of a mother’s greatest anxieties and nightmares.

A very realistic story about a woman’s affair with the boss, and a story portraying very complex emotions between new mothers trying to dismember the Monica Lewinsky scandal. A story about a woman staging a protest for an unborn child’s rights and the story that tests the limits a mother can go to for her children.

My favorite was the story of a woman traveling solo with her bawling toddler, trying to pacify him through the flight, and the unexpected kindness a stranger shows her that she misses at the end of her flight. What complexity of emotions there and what writing. Simply fascinating. I was sad to reach the end of that one. Consider this quote, and you’ll know what I’m talking about -

That even if a soul barely flickers on this astral plane, a week, a few days, it’s still you it’s chosen a sits mother.

Final Verdict

The stories are written brilliantly and cover topics that truly are so intimate that they have never been discussed before. I loved reading every woman’s POV and the myriad emotions that were depicted so realistically.
