Summary

Articleship is the compulsory three-year professional training that a student of the Chartered Accountancy (CA) course has to undergo in the industry doing audits and getting real-time experience. It is during this time that these students becoming professionals learn so many new things and get a glimpse of the corporate world that is waiting for them after they complete their course.

Articleship Diaries is about Joseph or Joe, as he likes being called, completing his articleship as part of the CA curriculum.

What happens in these three years is what this story is about. And it ranges from romance to professional life, friendships, office politics, bureaucracy, animosities, failure, success, and so much more.

My Review

Now before you think, oh CA, boring!!!

Stop!!

Let me tell you this book is anything but boring.

It is packed with so many great moments and episodes that the 340 pages will just keep turning themselves.

Joe is funny, charming, a romantic fool but above all, he is intelligent, sincere, and has a curiosity that works great for his profession. I loved him for his quality of speaking up against injustice.

His journey from objectifying girls when fresh out of college to thinking maturely about his relationship with Mary was truly worth reading about.

“There is no such thing as fate. We create our own destiny. If you want something, work for it. You will get it in the end in one form or another.”

Another bit I loved about the book was the way the author, Akhil, has simplified and explained every accountancy term. He uses detailed examples for every reader to assimilate and enjoy the story in conjunction with the technical.

He has left out nothing from these three years that a  CA student’s life goes through. Having seen my sister studying to become a CA, I could relate closely to all the phases. Appreciation to the author for the very realistic depiction without making it dull.

Final Verdict

The seamless weaving of the technical information with the very interesting story of Joe is, IMHO, what makes this story so unique and above and beyond any average love story.

Who Should Read This

This is a must-read book for budding CAs and even those who are already CAs for the sheer nostalgia that this book will evoke. But I also recommend this book for a lighthearted, fun-filled, easy-breezy read for readers like me who are not CAs.
