Admit it. We all judge a book by its cover. It’s like food - the gooier, creamy, and bright the food looks, the more you are tempted to eat it.

This is no different. When you see a beautiful hardback with golden engravings, vibrant colors, and beautiful fonts, add to it an attractive title and our hand just automatically moves to the bookshelf to pick it up. Doesn’t it?

Well, here is a list of books published in 2020 with the most beautiful covers that had me swooning and emptying my pockets.

1. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

That’s a well thought out cover with all the elements of a perfect magnetic cover, don’t you think? A beautiful color palette, a striking face, perfect overlapping elements (the moon, the crow) from the title, and the right font, with the author’s name, prominently displayed. Take a look!

2. American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

I just loved the barbed wire on the cover and the bird-like elements within them. It’s so symbolic and full of meaning. Kind-of gives you an idea of the story to expect. The title is prominently displayed that can be read from quite a distance.

3. Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

I adore the use of the color gold in Clare’s covers. It imparts a grandeur like no other. Also, the red, flowing hair has a magnetic appeal. The royal sword in the heroine’s hand adds a mysterious element.

4. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell

The face on the cover is absolutely gorgeous, and the black and white picture adds to the darkness of the title. It’s apparent the psychology of the book will take you to darker places.

5. The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

The book's cover font made me wonder if this was a children’s book, but a scan through the blurb, and I quickly concluded it’s an adult fantasy book. The riveting aspect about this cover was obviously the house perched at the cliff's edge overlooking the sea. There is so much mystery there that your interest is most certainly piqued.

6. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

Well, this one’s a no-brainer. At the sight of the author’s name on the cover, I had to pick this one up. And I’ve already described my penchant for golden elements on a cover. The dark background only brings out the shine even more.

7. Untamed by Glennon Doyle

I am not a fan of covers with multiple colors on them. But there are exceptions to be made. This combination of colors with the gold sparkle peeping out through them makes for an eye-catching combination. Don’t you agree?

8. The Guest List by Lucy Foley

I love, love, love books with all-white covers.  Period. I got it already 😉

9. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Morena-Garcia

The vibrant colors on the covers take all the glory, but here I’ll also give marks to the brilliance of the half-out-of-context cover face. Adds an element of mystery to the beauty, don’t you think?

10. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

It’s simple, really, this cover. But the dripping blood-like fluid from punctures made from teeth like pincers just takes the spooky element of the cover to the highest level.

11. A Good Neighborhood by Therese Anne Flower

Another one to my collection of white favorites, I love this one more for the simple play of colors, with bright yellow leaf. Minimal and sophisticated.

12. Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

Who would’ve thought a puny pomegranate half could be the next scary thing on the cover of a bestselling author and would be recognizable by at least half the world? I love the thinking here. The dripping juice has an eerie resemblance to blood, and it couldn’t get darker and spookier than this.

13. Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills

Of all the many-many topless men on book covers, I think this guy’s my favorite. Other than his mouth-watering physique, I love the intensity in the eyes. And the burnt-letter background just implies to me that he’s a letter-writing hunk. In today’s world, he’s a rare find.

14. Hamnet by Maggie O’Farell

Gold-embossing again- My favorite kind of book cover, and this one is intricate and has a lovely blue hue with only a minimalistic H. What’s not to like?

15. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

That half-man half-horse figure, blowing horns, is so otherworldly, and the brown and black color combination is so new and so appealing.

16. Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

The intense eyes and the chiseled jawline make you stop and retake a look. Of all the covers with eyes, this one is my favorite so far.

17. The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follett

This cover made it to the list for the prominent color green. I love this particular shade so much; it’s become my current favorite.

18. The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi

I loved the downright Indian cover here. It takes you into the heart of India and Indian women very subtly. I even love the pinkish-red hue that resembles the color of Henna on a woman’s hand.

19. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

I’m intrigued. Other than the cover's color, befitting the title, another strong pull to the cover was the open-roofed building with a cat walking towards it. I’m guessing this one’s going to be a significant exercise-for-the-mind kind of a book.

20. Introverted Me by Kevin Martz

In the category of photographed covers - This is the only cover that had a photograph that I really liked. Also, reading about an introverted guy is going to be intriguing, IMHO.

21. Beach Read by Emily Henry

In the category of cartoon graphics, this cover absolutely stands out for me. The color yellow cannot be ignored.

22. Long Bright River by Liz Moore

I loved the personification given to the title font as if being washed out in the rain or river water. The dark background spells it out to be a thriller most-probably or mystery; Excellent thinking again.

23. The Present by Kenneth Thomas

I’ve always had a thing for solar planetary pictures. The portrayal of Mars looks brilliant in this one, and the spaceship before it piques interest.

24. Before and After by Andrew Shanahan

No points for guessing this is going to be a weight loss journey (with a twist). The title, the cover- conveys it loud and clear. That’s the brilliance of this cover, I think.

25. The Travelers Within: Into the Unknown by Daniel Mode

Among covers with pictures of nature on them, this one stands out the best for me. I also loved the Into the Unknown subtitle. And the sunset in the background is so stunning!

I hope you enjoyed the list and the covers. Pick your favorite of the lot and comment below. You can also comment on any you think I’ve missed here.

Happy Reading!
