The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstein

I think I found my favorite book of the year!! Finally.

100 pages in and I was hooked. I just could not put this book down. I felt like I was in a cloud of perpetual mystery and fascination.

The story begins with a challenge set up between an enchanter’s daughter and an unknown candidate who would be tutored by a man called AH. The details of the challenge are not known in the beginning, but they unfold as the two competitors come of age. Then begins the journey of the circus that appears suddenly and within this fabulous traveling, the circus is a beautiful love story that is forced to test its very limits.

Along with magic and fantasy, this book explores the genres of mystery and romance equally well. The setting is magical, the characters have powerful roles and the plot is simply brilliant.

Harry Potter fans in search of a good fantasy as engaging as Harry Potter, with similar elements and powerful characters must read this book.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

This book won the Pulitzer in 1983 and the National Book award. It is considered a modern classic as it is a very powerful book that throws light on African-American culture and literature.

Written in the form of letters, it is the story of two adorable sisters Celie and Nettie. The character portrayal is the very strength of this book. You will be drawn to them.

But the topics discussed are painful (abuse, violence against women, racism, etc.) and the way they are discussed or written about is very raw and frankly very disturbing. The letter writing is initially between Celie and God and later between the two sisters. That’s when I thought the timeline was difficult to understand. Also, the dialect was difficult to follow for me.

But overall I think it was a fantastic book, that did not shy away from depicting African-American life the way it stands.

A blatant and eye-opening debut novel from a debut author, Such a Fun Age is a riveting and big-hearted tale about race and honor, that involves a youthful black sitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a startling connection that threatens to unnerve them both.

Emira is looking for an actual job while making ends meet while babysitting Briar, the toddler of Alix Chamberlain, a privileged and go-getter mother of two.

With empathy and touching social banter, Such a Fun Age explores the stubborn nature of transactional connections, what it means to make someone a part of the family, and the complex actuality of being an adult.
