About the Author
Author A.C. Merkel is a Mechanic in Birmingham Alabama.
Formerly lead Singer in local and regional bands. Known to friends as Drew.
Drew uses his former experience as stage crew for concerts to bring a very real edge to the magical musical lead character in the Lady Dreamscapes Series. Fan of authors such as Anne Rice, Ray Bradbury, CS Lewis. And influenced by television creatives Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer/Firefly) and Joseph Mallozzi (Stargate SG-1/Atlantis- Dark Matter) he brings charming/sarcastic wit and found family to his magical musical books. Drew is a founding member of Queer Indie.
In a candid conversation with Mru's Books he talks about his love for music and writing. Connect with the author at the following links -
Let’s start with 3 facts about you.
I am a mechanic by trade. I used to sing in a rock band. I’m a ginger. Lol
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I had piano lessons when I was 9. I immediately started to “write songs” after learning a few chord positions.
It was being interested in voice over acting and being a part of a group that did “fan dubs” of comic books. That gave me the drive to write stories for myself.
How long does it take you to write a book? Do you believe in writer’s block?
I’m a believer, and sufferer. Best thing for me is to stop and put on some mood music for whatever I’m writing. I wrote Her Name is Murder as a National Novel Writing Month project over 21 days. The daily goals are great!
What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
It varies for sure. Some days I can get 5k words done. Some 500. Best thing to dojo’s be kind to yourself and not force it.
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Music. I live referencing it. Song names. Paraphrases. One liners. All with respect to the artists.
I was very stuck on a scene in London Calling until I set the scene to Lacey Sturm’s Feels Like Forever in my head.
Why do you think it’s important for people to read London Calling?
This is a fun book! And exciting book. Maybe not truly important. If there’s a big takeaway it is that real heroism springs from love and mutual respect.
London Calling is the second book in the Lady Dreamscape Series, Her Name is Murder being the first. DO you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
London Calling picks up two years after Her Name is Murder. It’s an addition to the lore. And I didn’t want to repeat myself. So you need the first one to get the full benefit of the second. Lady Dreamscapes is a series I’d like to see live on forever (like the character) and have side adventures and prequels as well. But I’m working on something next month for NaNoWriMo that is a stand-alone that is separate from this series.
Your book lists under four genres Fantasy, LGBT, Romance, Science-Fiction. Of them what is the strongest genre it relates to? Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t in the blurb?
Fantasy for sure. London Calling is teaching heavily into Sci-Fi themes. It’s a time travel epic.
Something that isn’t in the blurb is the doppelgängers. But that’s all I’m saying. #spoilers
What’s the best thing about being a writer and what’s the most challenging? Is it energizing or exhausting?
Best is creation.
Worst is editing.
And thanks to my readers who helped with that. Ash and Anya who are very talented writers as well!
Absolute best thing was hearing the final chapter of the London Calling audiobook. I was really lucky to con Jaimee Moore into being involved. (Not sure how it happened really) it’s already being processed at Audible/ACX release date on that is in their hands!
Do you plan to write more books? What will they be about?
More Lady Dreamscapes for sure. But I have a side project developing which takes place in Birmingham Alabama. It’s the city I work in and I’m looking forward to unleashing my creativity upon the locale! Will be fun to go sit in a setting and write a scene for it!
Your top 3 favorite books?
This is my least favorite question! Three? No way! Lol I have been reading indies mostly this year. And I won’t list them because I’ll forget someone important! I will say that I wore out my Mother’s copy of RayBradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes. And being assigned Richard Adams’ Watership Down to read in tenth grade made me a lifelong fan.
A favorite author who inspires you.
Going with Michael Chrichton. Jurassic Park is still inspiring new films. Westworld is a huge thing for HBO. I want to leave something like that behind. Hopefully it’s lady Dreamscapes! But that’s also why I’m stepping out of that box next month to try something else.
