Recent Reading List: March 2021

This month again sadly, Covid has been catching up speed again, despite vaccination drives by the Indian Government. I hope you are well and healthy. Please take care of yourselves. Read many books and stay at home.

We did manage to have a small get-together at my mom’s place and it was a welcome breather from all the stay-at-home charade. The weather has been sizzling here in India, close to 40℃ and that’s another reason to stay at home.

The positive side to this is that I get to read plenty of books.

I am glad I managed to keep up my reading streak this March and complete another 9 great books in the month. I got to catch up on my Netgalley bookshelf with 2 books. At the same time, I managed to read 3 bestsellers of 2020. And one of these books has become my new favorite.

Read on to find out more.

The book discusses the seven rules of money to making wealth. And five laws of gold to multiplying it exponentially.
I created a summary of this classic personal finance guide with Infographics to give you all the key information in a concise manner.
Read this book if you want to gain money, maintain it, and make it compound exponentially or earn you more money.

“You is important, you is kind.”

Three ordinary women, two black maids, and a white woman are about to do something out-of-the-ordinary. And the journey to their destination will leave you sometimes laughing and sometimes shedding tears.

Skeeter, Aibeleen, and Minny have been written so perfectly, with their narration, language style, and their thoughts that you’ll love them instantly for their distinct qualities. A moving, heartwarming and hopeful read that will stay with you long after you’ve finished reading it.

This is a book that needs more recommendations and reading. If it’s not a classic yet I hope it becomes one soon.

An Indo-Persian fantasy world inspired by Islamic mythology. Roma is a Devadasi – a sacred slave of the gods. Leviathan is the son of the ruling tyrant. Both live for one goal, to protect their people from the social atrocities they live in every day. But their paths are very different. Leviathan has military training to be a lethal soldier. While Roma has a unique talent that is as yet unknown to her and gives her the name of a sorceress.

I hadn’t read a fantasy with Indo-Persian roots. So it was a unique experience reading this fantasy. If you’re geared up to be patient in finding answers in the next book that is as yet unreleased in the series, do pick this.

Before death is a library with infinite books. And in these books are infinite choices to live a life you wanted to live but could not because of the choices you made in the real life.

Nora contemplates suicide. But when she lands in the library will she be able to make a choice and go back to living a life she always wanted to live? Or will she forever keep switching between lives?

An amazing plot, a unique take, and a very critical message.

The right offering to readers during these trying times of the pandemic where people have become lonely and secluded.

Davis Reed is a private detective plagued by the three “A’s”: anger, alcohol, and anxiety. On a hunch from his sister, he follows his brother-in-law thinking he is cheating on his sister. But the truth is so obscure that it forces Davis into hiding in a secluded cabin in the woods.

A flawed central character, some fun characters that will make you laugh, and an interesting plot to keep you going.

My favorite read of the month.

A bank robber, when fails at a robbery, turns the robbery into a hostage situation by running into an apartment viewing with a gun. What is unexpected is the outcome of the situation. The hostages are released unhurt. But when the police barge into the apartment all they hear is a gunshot being fired and a pool of blood. The robber has vanished.

The exasperating interviews of the hostages that follow might make you think they’re all unhinged but they are all hiding a secret.

Backman’s writing deserves an ovation. There’s humor, there’s a mystery, there are life lessons and plot twists. He starts with a man on a bridge and takes you through so many lives of so many people that you will read transfixed.

The Blue Umbrella by Ruskin Bond

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s is the best detective on the force, But she’s under pressure, on medication, and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgment call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is rest. But when Staffordshire Police summons her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns.

I love classic whodunit stories. And this one had me hooked, it was immersive all the way. I loved the pace of the novel. It was fast, and it never dropped. And the author narrated the story so that you could follow the investigation very closely and deduce the killer in your way. The plot was unraveled wonderfully without confusing the reader. The author kept me hanging on to every word effortlessly.

This is the story of a school for the magically gifted. This is the first book in the Scholomance series. And it justifies being the first book. Not much of a plot here. Some magically gross monsters keep attacking the students. The only aim for the students at the school is survival.

Be ready to find pages on pages of descriptive text on how the school functions. What do the students do? Why their parents send them to a school when only a few make it out alive and so on.

There is also a bit of romance brewing between El and Orion, the central characters. I might not pick up the next book here.

Tess lost her young daughter in a car accident nine months back. The trauma of the accident follows her and makes her follow Eve. Eve is the 12-year old daughter of the man Brady, who killed Tess’s daughter. She’s is stalking Eve compulsively. And then suddenly one morning Eve goes missing and all fingers point to Tess. But Tess has no clue of the whereabouts of Eve.

I recommend this book to older readers who’ve been through relationships or marriage to better understand the book. A lot of marital problems are discussed which might be a dampener for younger readers.
